I been worryin’ that my time is a little unclear
I been worryin’ that I’m losing the ones I hold dear
I been worryin’ that we all live our lives in the confines of fear

Disclaimer: I am not a psychologist. I am just a normal guy who tries to deal with this as everybody does.
No matter how much effort we put in hiding it, fear is one of the basic emotions in the repertoire that every human being has. A lot has been said about fear, both for good and for bad: there are those who demonize its mere existence and there are those who take advantage of it to learn and improve in a certain area of their lives. And since it is something common to everyone, I think it was worth a couple of lines.
Fears and fears
There are many types of fears and I am pretty sure there are cool taxonomies out there that take care of categorizing them properly. For me, it is enough to know how to differentiate between a fear and a phobia. A fear can activate our state of alarm because of a perceived danger that can be perfectly justified due to some circumstance that happens to us. Conversely, a phobia is a kind of fear taken to the extreme, non-adaptive, and that can generate constant unease. Due to the tremendous discomfort that the phobia causes, the person who suffers from it usually avoids the stimulus that causes such a sensation. Being afraid of flying is not the same as having a phobia of flying or airplanes, for example. And last but not least, we have to talk about panic.
From fear to panic in no time
Fear is a universal, adaptive emotion, and I guess most of us agree that it is even useful and necessary. However, for many of us it is very easy to cross the threshold of the door that communicates fear with panic. Panic is still an intense fear in which we fear losing control of the situation, or of ourselves, and it can even make us fear for our lives, since we live the fear as it if were completely real.. In fact, while this is not necessarily the case with «normal» fear, experiencing panic often comes along with a series of physiological symptoms, such as shortness of breath, tremors or tachycardia. A psychologist once told me that “to lose fear is to accept losing control”, and it seems to me one of the most accurate phrases that I have ever been told. All human beings need security, I agree with that, but we also need to know how to dance with uncertainty and not having control.
What helps me to face my fears
Even though I have overcome quite a bunch of fears during my life, there are others I am still fighting against. As a general rule, I try to apply the following tips to deal with panic and fear.
Of course, this might not apply to all cases. As I wrote once, life can be wonderful, but it also has very fucked up moments in which the darkness can swallow you and the abyss seems to have no way out. Trying to overcome a few small fears is not the same as trying to get out of a sea of fears. If you have been in this situation for a long time, do not hesitate to contact a professional, because it is completely normal if you are not able to get out of that situation on your own.
Again: It is completely normal if you are not able to get out of that situation on your own. Ask for help if necessary!
